The rupee sustained overnight surge versus the dollar on the money market on Wednesday in the process of trading activity, dealers said. The rupee extended overnight gains in terms of the dollar, picking up eight paisas for buying at Rs 138.55 and it also rose by 13 paisas for selling Rs 138.60, they said.

INTER-BANK MARKET RATES: OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee also appreciated by 10 paisas against the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 138.20 and Rs 138.70 respectively, they said. While, the rupee was up by 10 paisas against the euro for buying and selling at Rs 157.50 and Rs 159.00 respectively, they said.

In the third Asian trade, the pound tried to find its footing on Wednesday after sliding on fresh concerns about the possibility of a "no-deal" Brexit, while the dollar eased ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy decision.

Sterling staggered up 0.2 percent to $1.3091 after suffering a loss of 0.7 percent overnight as lawmakers rejected a proposal to give parliament a path to prevent a potentially chaotic hard exit. Britain is due to leave the EU on March 29.

"The Fed is widely expected to stand pat on policy. But the dollar could face pressure if the Fed opts to highlight negative effects of the US government shutdown in its statements," said Masafumi Yamamoto, chief forex strategist at Mizuho Securities.

Markets were also focused on US-Sino trade talks in Washington on Wednesday and Thursday, while the closely-watched US jobs report will be released on Friday.

The dollar index against a basket of six major currencies dipped 0.1 percent to 95.732 following a slip to a two-week low of 95.620 overnight after US.

The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 71.255, the greenback was available at 4.107 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was at 6.715 versus the Chinese yuan.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The Pak rupee recovered its earlier losses versus the major foreign currencies including the greenback and the British pound in the local currency market on Wednesday.

Following lack of buyers' interest in the market, the greenback registered reduction and ended lower for buying and selling at Rs 138.00 and Rs 138.70 against the overnight closing trend of Rs 138.20 and Rs 139.30 respectively, local currency dealers said.

Likewise, the local currency also followed the same suit in relation to the pound sterling. Consequently, the pound's buying and selling rates declined from the Tuesday's closing of Rs 181.10 and Rs 182.40 to Rs 180.10 and Rs 181.40 respectively, they added.

RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee gained 10 paisa against the dollar at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi here on Tuesday.

The dollar opened at Rs 138.40(buying) and Rs 138.50(selling) against last rate of Rs 138.50(buying) and Rs 138.60(selling). It closed at at Rs 138.40(buying) and Rs 138.50(selling).

The buying and selling rates of one tola of gold was Rs 67,800(selling) and Rs 67, 5000(buying) in the local Sarafa (gold) markets of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
